Zig Zag

Valentina Evangelista’s Zig Zag dress at Shiny Shabby this round was one of those impulse buys that I fall prey to once in awhile…I saw the seriously gorgeous pattern and bought it without looking very closely at it, only to put it on later to find that it allows for your girls to swing wild and free. Very 18th century France—perfect for exposing your bobbling breasts to the world. Since this is not a wild and free sort of blog, though, and because I am more of the heavy-gusseted-hardware-for-chest-immobilization type anyway, I wore one of Izzie’s marvelous tank appliers to add a little layering effect. Mina Nakamura’s flowing locks from Hair Fair were perfect for this outfit.

Contrary to most women, I love one-piece swimsuits. I love the fabric, I love the shaping they give the body (I personally desire all available shaping help). I like knowing that it’s going to be pretty reliable at staying on while swimming—although one of the most mortifying moments of my life occurred when my one piece fell off on a waterslide and I was too dazed by the whack I had got on my head to notice. To my eternal shame, it was up to my friend Justin to put my swimsuit back on in public. Since that day I make sure I am strapped in securely. Pixel parts tend to stay where you put them, though, so this sweet suit by the Neve team was the perfect choice today.

Relaxing Moment

It’s been a lovely weekend of giving thanks for friends and family and for having enough when there are so many in the world who do not. Now to look forward and remember to be grateful along the way, and not take the good things in life for granted. Thanks as always, to my dear friend Stewart for being willing to put up with the ups and downs of SL fashion to help me with my photos.

I finally admitted to a friend recently that I wear my mesh head mainly out of laziness because there’s not so much to fix in Photoshop. There! My dirty secret is out! Judge me! Fortunately for me, Monicuzza Babenco released the beautiful Noemi skin applier for both the Logo and the Lelutka mesh heads this month at Shiny Shabby. Also at Shiny Shabby are Luna Jubilee’s latest single poses, which were perfect for today’s shots. The Neve team has also been hard at work and released several designs this week that hint at autumn weather and the end of summer heat.

I took the plunge this week for my sixth rezday to try one of the Lelutka mesh heads. I chose the Karin head and used the Glam Affair Avril applier from the Shiny Shabby event for my photo today. I have been wearing it for a couple of days now, so I am getting used to looking at it.

I haven’t been very interested in mesh heads due to the lack of individualization possible with them. No doubt they are beautifully crafted, but I am just too big a fan of having more choices about my face. Since my view of myself is always changing, the lack of robust change possible with mesh heads makes them a less attractive choice for me. Even with different skin tone and different styling, you can still tell it’s the same facial structure no matter what appliers you add.  Wearing the same skin on ten different shapes provides much more variety, to me, than ten different skins on the same shape, which the applier model encourages. For those who feel differently, I respect that view and wish them happy head meshing. This is only my experience and I don’t presume to tell other people what to like and dislike.

The other big experience I had was all my friends telling me that I didn’t look like myself. Every single person who mentioned it said the same thing. I change my SL avatar face all the time, so I don’t think that there is any one “me” face (although I admit to not taking off Aida Ewing’s Katra for quite some time now); but there is something about the customization of facial features that allows “Eliza” to come through and be recognized, whereas the mesh head made me look like a different person, and unrecognizable to my friends. And there was nothing I could do to change it besides pick a different color of lipstick or eyeshadow. The last downside is that one is entirely dependent on having skin makers who make appliers for the mesh heads. The list is growing, but still pretty limiting in terms of what is available skin-wise in SL, particularly for fantasy or sci-fi skins.

On the other hand, the head itself is very beautiful. This is a lovely face:

Even if I do wish that the lips could be made a little less full and less pouty according to my personal taste, I cannot deny how gorgeous the workmanship on this mesh head is. The appliers worked flawlessly and were easy to manage. The options for hiding and showing makeup, eyelashes, ears, etc. are ingenious. It was fun to play with. Angles and harsh windlight effects are reduced with the mesh head.

But it isn’t me.

I likely won’t wear a mesh head when hanging out with friends, but for photography and fashion purposes, it is an interesting area to explore. Will I purchase another mesh head? Maybe. The investment is far more than the return can be until customization is possible, but it’s a fun accessory. Will I continue to purchase appliers for the mesh head I currently own? Probably. For taking SL photographs and showcasing items mesh heads can be valuable for modeling tattoos or makeups that I want to show on my blog in the future, because they are definitely a new and interesting trend in SL fashion. I look forward to what the future brings.

  1. Harper Beresford

I have tried the heads with several appliers and it’s really a toss up. I have made some lovely “looks” that don’t look like Harper but are very pleasing. I would say the Glam Affair skins don’t do a lot for me on these heads–they seem flat and kind of doll like, which is not me. However, YS&YS has been really gorgeous on them as has Skinnery. If I had to wear one, I would go with YS&YS or possibly League and would feel pretty and almost like myself.

  2. Eliza

I will definitely be trying different appliers! It’s a pretty look, no doubt, but I am thinking they will be more a cosmetic option for me than a staple. Thanks for the recommendation!
