The Pain Tithe

I’ve written about Laini Taylor’s outstanding novels Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Days of Blood and Starlight before, but since it’s Halloween-time all of my favorite creepy characters are making their way to the forefront of my mind. So today we have Karou, a chimera soul in a human body, stuck between two worlds and creating bodies for for the endangered chimera race. Karou has to make do with what she can find though, so some of her bodies are a bit unusual

A downside to this magic is that it must be paid for with physical pain, so Karou is pretty beat up looking all of the time, since she is building an army. I wouldn’t trade places with her, but I still want her blue hair!

The heat and humidity have passed and we are back into autumn weather. There is a lot to choose from for autumn-wear this month. Izzie Button’s sweet new Irene skin reminded me of this tune—one I’ve loved since I first heard it in high school. It always made me wish I were blonde (apparently dark-haired girls just don’t inspire men to burst forth to declare their love via song). So for a day, I can be blonde, thanks to Elikatira’s lovely Breeze style.

If you believe the history books (or television portrayals) of Henry the VIII’s fifth wife, she gets something of a bad rap, characterized as at best an ignorant but sexually adventurous girl and and worst a conniving, adulterous and treasonous criminal. This latter description was clearly her husband’s conclusion, since he had her beheaded on February 13th, 1542. If you look at her pictures she has a bit of a long nose and underbite, but she must have had her charms to get Henry on the hook.

She probably wore all of her queen’s finery rather happily, such as this informal but beautifully detailed gown from Bilo. Another perk for Henry’s queens had to be the jewelry. This gorgeous cross from Maxi Gossamer for this month’s Fameshed fit the bill, and the Solaria ring from Tiffy Vella  is as heavy and luxurious an adornment as any lady could wish for.

When I read about dragons I always wish I could fly with one…as long as there is a way to avoid getting burnt. Kay Wyatt in Carrie Vaughan’s Voices of Dragons does actually get to fly with dragons, although she does fall off a few times. I will keep that conveniently out of my fantasy, though!
