The Pain Tithe

I’ve written about Laini Taylor’s outstanding novels Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Days of Blood and Starlight before, but since it’s Halloween-time all of my favorite creepy characters are making their way to the forefront of my mind. So today we have Karou, a chimera soul in a human body, stuck between two worlds and creating bodies for for the endangered chimera race. Karou has to make do with what she can find though, so some of her bodies are a bit unusual

A downside to this magic is that it must be paid for with physical pain, so Karou is pretty beat up looking all of the time, since she is building an army. I wouldn’t trade places with her, but I still want her blue hair!

La Muerta

I sometimes think that of all the people in the world, the Mexicans are the ones who really get death right. They are not afraid of it, and it is a constant part of their lives. Deceased loved ones are even celebrated on certain occasions. One of my favorite Mexican traditions is the decoration of sugar skulls, or calaveras. Zara Yip brings this tradition to life with her beautiful face tattoo called “La Muerta”. This round of FLUX has all manner of items for the Day of the Dead, and one of my favorites were the Death’s Devotion eyes from the Stringer Mausoleum. I edited them a bit to let my regular eye come through the middle of the flower. I chose one of Truth Hawks’ newest designs in white to give our not-so-dead girl a more ghostly feel.
