In my neck of the woods spring was a long time coming. A long time. But all of a sudden this week the trees decided to wake up and put on a show. Flowering trees are my favorite in the springtime, and the showier the better. My all-time favorite, though, is the dogwood tree. There are five of them planted in front of one of the schools I drive by every day and they are spectacular. And it’s about time.
It brought to mind this lovely poem by Tony Hoagland entitled “Color of the Sky”. And since the words really do say it all, the last few lines are what I will leave you with today.
A little dogwood tree is losing its mind;
overflowing with blossomfoam,
like a sudsy mug of beer;
like a bride ripping off her clothes,
dropping snow white petals to the ground in clouds,
so Nature’s wastefulness seems quietly obscene.
It’s been doing that all week:
making beauty,
and throwing it away,
and making more.
