I took piano lessons for almost fifteen years when I was growing up. One would think that this would make me a virtuoso of sorts, but the truth is that I am quite average, mostly playing for church meetings or accompanying singers or as a backup pianist for my ukulele-obsessed husband, who likes to have ukulele/piano jam sessions. Yeah. Nerds. So anyway, if there is something I really want to play, I can usually find a way to play it given enough time. Obviously not Rachmaninoff, but you know. Regular things. The mathematical and physical perfection of music performed well is to me one of the most magical things in life.
The piano is a wonderful instrument, but one thing a piano definitely isn’t is portable. And keyboards are just not musically acceptable. Note: piano snob. So last year I started taking guitar lessons, and made my teacher start pulling his hair out when he asked me what kind of music I wanted to play on the guitar. “Whatever I feel like playing”, I told him. So he makes me play scales all the day long. It’s not elegant or attractive, and my husband’s noise-cancelling earphones have saved our marriage when he just can’t listen to the scales any longer, but this is something that takes time. Maybe fifteen years’ time. One day, though, I will be able to walk down a street like Eliza with her instrument in its cool case from the Body Factory, knowing that wherever it is I am headed, I carry the magic with me.
