Hope

This post is for the lovely Strawberry Singh, who is going through a rough time right now.

I remember one time when a devastating personal loss made me want to die. I am not kidding. I thought maybe I could get my heart to stop beating by just wishing it. And I wished it for a long, long time. From September to April of that year I lived on auto-pilot, and I really don’t remember a thing about it except for this black, sucking darkness and hatred for everyone who was happy. Towards the end of April two dear friends asked me to drive up into the mountains with them for the evening for a picnic. It was still pretty cool, but the mountain pass through Sundance had just opened so we decided to take advantage. I remember very clearly two things: first, there was still a lot of snow on the ground, and second, the aspen and birch trees were starting to put out leaves anyway, and it was so beautiful. It was as if they were saying to me, “if we can get through this freezing winter and tons of snow dumped on us and bloom again, so can you. We know this snow crap is going to get out of here sooner or later and we choose to have faith in that and move forward. So should you.”  I always feel a bit foolish when I say the trees spoke to me, but there it is. The earth has a great deal to teach us, and I have always wanted to be strong like those trees and move forward no matter what setbacks occur.

Every one of us will have dark times in our lives. We are not meant to stay there, but make our way back into the light.

Thank you for sharing that. I also feel that the earth speaks to us as well, I guess we just need to take the time to listen.
