I remember watching Luc Besson’s La Femme Nikita after returning to the United States after spending a couple of years in France. I remember feeling very cosmopolitan because now I could watch French films without English subtitles—the very height of sophistication. I was not prepared, though, for how big an impact it would have on me. Though there have been several creditable remakes both in film and television, none of them has come close to the raw, gritty and fantastic 1990 original with the wonderful Anne Parillaud. If you haven’t seen it, give it a whirl. It’s pretty good with English subtitles too.
